Originally, I wanted to share some of my reflections on the amazing new Netflix series “High on the Hog”, however, I wanted to shift gears just a bit for today’s issue.
As those reflections marinate for a future post, food as a binding agent in communities remained on my mind.
What is it about food, good food especially, that makes the communal experience memorable?
How does time spent over meals, or small bites or quick drinks, open gateways for love and friendships?
I’ve been reflecting on the power of food and friendship- specifically sisterhood, for both personal and collective healing.
I find it special knowing that meals, the ambiance, the seating, the timing, and all other details, have been made with you in mind. And, that the people who are there, also experience the same.
“Parables of Love” stems from personal collected experiences over the past few weeks. Food has been one of the storytellers captivating us from plate to heart.
I have thus learned about the ability…
to love deeply
to air out deep-rooted concerns
to have joy
to affirm the hidden areas of myself
to deepen my curiosity of others
to create new hubs with people I can call home.
Last night was another gateway into this parable as I shared a meal, a scrumptious one (that I forgot to take a pic!), with three brilliant, beautiful, and loving Womanist & Conflict Resolution Scholars turned friends.
Through food, we shared laughter, wisdom, and dreams for the future. We bonded over our different yet similar experiences in dating, in our workplaces, being in academia, and exercising our agency in our expression of faith and identity.
I left our dinner with more than a full stomach and I look forward to more parables.

To love and be loved…
Until next time,
