[TCW Reads] New Bones Abolition: Captive Maternal Agency and the (After)life of Erica Garner
by Joy James, a co-facilitation study group with the Decolonial Feminist Collective
Tonight at 7pm EST, join me (The Conflicted Womanist) alongside the Decolonial Feminist Collective for the second edition of our collective study group. This time, we’ll be in conversation with Dr. Joy James over their newest release - New Bones Abolition: Captive Maternal Agency and the (After) Life of Erica Garner.
About the Text
“Joy James offers us a new framework for inspired abolitionist organizing and risk-taking today, one that situates the everyday and ordinary acts of revolutionary love and caretaking at the radical root of resistance to anti-Blackness. James introduces us to a powerful figure in these struggles, the "captive maternal," who emerge from communities devastated by or disappeared within the legacy of colonialism and chattel slavery, and who sustain resistance and rebellion toward the horizon of collective liberation.
This deep meditation on the role of revolutionary care honors the legacy of Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner."
In our time together, we’ll discuss the connections between the limits of legalism, abolition, Black feminisms and captive maternal agency, movement capture, monetized Black Death, and prioritizing care to sustain resistance.
Completing the reading beforehand isn’t required for attending - you are welcome to study & strategize with us! Register here to receive the zoom link and also get the PDF version of this text.
Sacred Hours: A Silent Morning Work Session Offering
the purpose of "sacred hours" is to be an offering that gives space to organize thoughts, nurture ideas, and, most importantly, keep us rooted in the collective solidarity practices that we are called to tend to.
one hour, in the morning, with silence + a group setting to accomplish what's been lingering in your mind to do.
whether it's a book you've been meaning to read, or some thoughts that need to be fleshed out, all are welcome to work on.
during our one hour, there'll be 1-2 stretch breaks, and i may include instrumental music in the background. at the end, you're invited to share what you worked on - in case potential collaborators are in the space - but it is not required to do so.
join us next Thursday morning, February 29th, at 7a EST for our next sacred hours work session.
this space is open, so you're more than welcome to share with a friend - registration is required.
Whether you’ll join the offerings for this evening or next Thursday morning, I’m looking forward to sharing space with you.
